iOS 7 Design Could Change Before Final Version Hits

There’s a good possibility the design changes shown off at WWDC could get an overhaul themselves before iOS 7 hits later this fall. That’s either really good news, or really bad news, depending on your opinion of the new Ive-ified OS. But one thing has become apparent over these past few days: reactions are most definitely mixed.

One of the bigger criticisms of the redesign is that there doesn’t seem to be a unified theme with Apple’s stock icons. I have read plenty of users complain that many icons look like designed individually, maybe by a deranged kindergartener hopped up on too much sugar. I tend to agree. But what was shown off to the public early this week was merely a “mid-stride” look at what’s to come, according to those close to Apple.

The Next Web claims that, after speaking to folks at WWDC, Jony Ive actually used Apple’s marketing and communications department to design the new stock app icons. Once a color palette was agreed upon, it was then the app design team’s job to work on the “interiors” of the apps. “We’ve also been hearing that there wasn’t a whole lot of communication between the various teams behind say, Mail and Safari,” The Next Web was told.

Not only that, but there were apparently teams inside each group that disagreed on many designs, which is why there are so many inconsistencies between apps. “Those will be hammered out in days ahead.” Work is still ongoing, of course, and what’s being seeded out to developers is supposedly behind what was even shown off on stage—that’s how quickly the OS is evolving. Right now, though, the design and other visual tricks are “most in flux.” That clearly indicates something more refined will surely be available to consumers in the coming months.

As Apple releases betas before iOS 7’s final release, it’s likely we’ll see some noticeable differences in terms of design, hopefully showing a stronger focus on consistency. How drastically Apple will change the aesthetics remains to be seen.

Apple going with 4.7" and 5.7" iPhone trials for next year, colorful entry level one to be $99

When it rains, it pours. After Apple entered the modern mobile OS era with iOS 7 revealed on Monday, now sources with knowledge of the matter have confirmed for Reuters that Cupertino is actively looking into larger screens and affordable versions in more colors for its iPhone franchise.

While the colorful cheapo iPhone and ones with big displays have been rumored to be in Apple's labs for a while, for the first time we get the sizes that Apple is considering, and screenwise they seem to be in line with what the Android army is offering now.

Apple is reportedly seriously examining 4.7" and 5.7" sizes, which is just shy of today's Android flagship and upcoming phablets average. Still, this doesn't mean those will see the light of day next year, but rather that Apple might be testing them to determine usability: "They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you're not really sure whether this is the final prototype," said one of the sources.

As for the affordable iPhone, it is indeed being actively worked on, looking similar to what we have now, but in casing made of different materials and painted in multiple colors. The price bandied about for it is around $99, and to get to that point Apple might be slipping the announcement into a later date even, mentioned the source.

The iPhone 5S with fingerprint reading technology and the entry level iPhone will reportedly start trial runs soon, with the flagship ramping up in August for the September announcement. The plastic iPhone was supposed to follow the same scheme and start test runs this month, but "the mixing of colors is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards," said a source in Asia. Still, the plan for now apparently is to ship 20 million of those entry level iPhones in Q4, when the holiday shopping craze will be in full bloom.
