Sony unveils Xperia Z1 (Honami), QX lens-style cameras

Sony officially unveiled the hotly anticipated Xperia Z1 that has become well-known under the internal petname Honami. The Z1 brought friends on stage – the QX line of lens-style cameras and a number of other accessories.

The Z1 is undoubtedly the star of the show – measuring just 8.5mm in thickness, the Xperia Z1 houses a large 1/2.3" sensor – that's about 70% larger than the sensors on most phones and Sony achieved it without a hump on the back like most other handsets with large sensors.
The camera uses all-Sony tech – an F/2.0 Sony G Lens, a Sony Exmor RS sensor and a Sony BIONZ image processor.
The camera shoots 20.7MP stills and records 1080p video (sorry, no 4K). Sony has developed a custom camera app that offers manual controls and impressive augmented reality features. Third-party devs will be able to use the advanced features of the camera to make their own apps as well.

The Xperia Z1 justifies its name by borrowing the best features of the Xperia Z – slim, water resistant body with OmniBalance design, a sharp 5" 1080p screen and powerful Snapdragon chipset. However, the Z1 is certified to go deeper underwater, it has a new, higher-quality screen and it packs the latest Snapdragon 800 chipset running a Sony-customized version of Android 4.3. And the battery capacity has been bumped up to 3,000mAh.
The new flagship has 4G LTE connectivity, along with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and NFC, which are used to connect with the next couple of gadgets.
The Sony Xperia Z1 will be available this month in Black, White and Purple.

The Sony Cyber-shot QX line of lens-style cameras launches with two models – the QX100 and QX10. Both have their own optics and image sensor and can use an Android or iOS device as viewfinder (pairing is done with NFC if available then the image is streamed over Wi-Fi).
The QX100 has a huge 1" Exmor R sensor with 20.2MP resolution, F/1.8 ZEISS Vario-Sonar T* lens, 3.6x optical zoom and stabilization – the same specs as the acclaimed Sony RX100M II. The QX10 is more compact and features a longer zoom range – 10x – and has a Sony G Lens coupled with a 1/2.3" 18.2MP Exmor R sensor.

Both lens-style cameras shoot 1,440 x 1080p video at 30 frames per second and have enough juice in their batteries for 230 shots (or 55-65 minutes of video recording depending on the model). The QX cameras can attach to smartphones of various sizes and some Xperia phones will get dedicated cases that protect the phone and offer an attachment point for the camera. Both QX100 and QX10 can work separately from the phone, while still streaming to the viewfinder, which makes framing in tight spots a breeze.

Sony Cyber-shot QX10
The Sony Cyber-shot QX100 and QX10 are available for pre-order in the UK starting today and will go on sale in Europe by the end of September. The QX100 will cost you $500 and the QX10 is half that at $250. For comparison, the RX100M II that has the same lens and sensor as the QX100 is $750.

Apple's iPhone event is all but set for September 10

Apple has sent invitation to the press for a special event, which will be held on September 10 at the Apple's Campus in Cupertino. There is no actual clue on the invitation besides the slogan "This should brighten everyone's day."

It's safe to assume the conference will be about the two new iPhones that have been doing rounds in the rumorland for quite some time now.
Apple is expected to unveil the next generation iPhone 5S there with a faster processor and a better camera, accompanied with a dual-LED flash. Also, there has been lots of leaks confirming the new colors of the iPhone 5S - Gold and Graphite in addition to the Black and White flavors.
A cheaper model called iPhone 5C is also supposed to be announced at the event. The device is rumored to pack the same specs as the current iPhone 5, which should be discontinued after the 5C hits the shelves. The iPhone 5C should come in even more colors including pink, yellow, blue and green.
September 10 is just a week ahead, so all those rumors will be put to rest.

Apple will hold a second iPhone event on September 11 in China

Apple sent out invites for its iPhone unveiling event yesterday, scheduled for September 10. Chinese media, however, is getting different invites for the following day – it seems that Tim Cook's negotiations with China Mobile's chairman have paid off.
China Mobile is the world's biggest carrier with 740 million subscribers and yet Apple had no deal with it, having partnered only with China's second and third carriers. The issue was with China Mobile's non-standard 3G and 4G tech, which was not supported by the chipsets Apple was using. New Qualcomm-made chipsets do support them though.
Another problem was that the iPhone was too pricey for the majority of China Mobile subscribers, who often went with local Android-based phones instead. Well, the Chinese invite features the same colorful circles that are allegedly a nod towards the many colors of the lower-priced iPhone 5C, which should have a more competitive price.
Mingchi Kuo, analyst from KGI, is forecasting that Apple will sell 1.5-2.5 million iPhones in Q3 alone, which would achieve around 25% and 35% market share (for iPhone 5S and 5C respectively) among TDD-LTE enabled handsets on China Mobile.
The event, the first ever Apple event to be held in China, is scheduled for 10am local time on September 11.

Microsoft officially acquires Nokia's devices & services units

In a (barely) surprising fashion, Microsoft has reached a deal to acquire Nokia's devices and services units. The deal will also include the Finnish company's patents and mapping services.

Under the reached upon agreement between the two companies' boards of directors, Microsoft will pay €3.79 billion for the devices and services business. Microsoft is also paying €1.65 billion for a 10-year license to use Nokia's patents. However, the patent deal between Espoo and Redmond isn't exclusive and the Finns are free to license their patents to other companies as well.
This brings the total sum of the transaction total to €5.44 billion. The Redmond giant will pay the sum in cash.
The deal will see Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop return to Microsoft, where he will head the Devices division. Risto Siilasmaa will be Nokia's CEO on an interim basis going forward.
Once the deal closes, 32,000 people will transfer to Microsoft. Out of those, 4,700 are in Finland, while 18,300 are directly involved in manufacturing and assembly of products worldwide.
The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, after it goes through the usual round of regulatory approvals.

Say hello to Android 4.4 KitKat, coming next in line

Google recently announced its latest version of Android - 4.3 Jelly Bean, which turned out to be nothing to write home about. Ever since then, the next iteration of Android OS has taken the spotlight and has been the talk of the town.
Just when all of us thought that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie would be the next upcoming version of the Android OS, Google has announced that the successor of the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean would be named KitKat (yeah, the brand) and it is Android 4.4, not 5.0 as rumored before.

Sundar Pichai, the Android and Chrome head has confirmed the naming scheme of the next version of Android. Android 4.4 KitKat is named after Neslte's popular candy bar, which is trademarked and licensed by Hershey in the US.
Google also says that "it's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody". The bold statement also suggests that Google plans to make use of its next iteration of Android in smartwatches, gaming consoles and other electronic gadgets.
Sundar Pichai, in his Google+ post also revealed that Android device activations have now passed 1 billion and says he "can't wait to release the next version of the platform."
Here's the list of past Android versions with the dessert naming scheme:

Android 1.5: Cupcake
Android 1.6: Donut
Android 2.0: Eclair
Android 2.2: Froyo
Android 2.3: Gingerbread
Android 3.0: Honeycomb
Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich
