Apple iWatch Team “Aggressively” Hiring New Talent

At this point it’s pretty clear that Apple has some sort of plans to get its feet wet in wearable technology, and most rumors suggest that the company will launch an iWatch at some point next year. We’ve heard that a team of at least 100 engineers is already working on the device, which may have a 1.5-inch screen and run a full version of iOS, but the Financial Times said Monday that Apple is now starting to “aggressively” hire new talent for the team.

The fear, FT said, is that Apple won’t have a brand new product in the next year, save for evolutionary updates to its existing product portfolio of mobile devices including the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Apple is already trademarking the iWatch brand and it makes sense that the company wants to get the best team behind the product as possible, especially if it wants to compete with rumored devices from Google and Sony’s new SmartWatch 2 device. A more recent rumor suggests Microsoft may try to enter the smart watch arena, too.

Apple isn’t just trying to hire new employees for the iWatch team, Financial Times said. In fact, it’s also considering acquiring small teams and companies that would bring in a group of talent at once. Pebble is currently a hot consumer smartwatch product, and it’s possible Apple has its eye on that company. The CEO of Pebble declined to comment on any discussions in February, however.

After TSMC affair Apple might return to Samsung in 2015

Apple and Samsung are having very public fights in courts around the globe, but the two companies were working quite well together with Samsung supplying components for Apple's gadgets. Inevitably, the legal spats lead to talk that Apple will be moving on to TSMC for its next chip orders.
Cupertino did indeed cut down the reliance on Samsung, the orders for 20nm Apple A8 chipsets was given to TSMC. This is next year's chipset as TSMC is still working on test 20nm chips, it remains to be seen just what Apple will use for this year's iDevices (presumably TSMC, but on a bigger process).
However, it seems that it's not over between Samsung and Apple - The Korea Economic Daily is reporting that the South Korean giant will be making the next chipsets, the Apple A9, that will power the iPhone 7 (or is it 6S?) in 2015.
Samsung's advanced 14nm process, which is ahead of what TSMC will have to offer in 2015, is named as the reason behind Apple's reconciliation with the Koreans.

iPhone 5 Electric Shock Kills Chinese Woman, Apple to Investigate

Apple will look into reports that a Chinese woman was killed by her iPhone 5. The charging device apparently delivered a deadly electric shock to 23-year-old Ma Ailun when she answered an incoming call. The incident occurred last Thursday to Ailun, a flight attendant for China Southern Airlines, an official Chinese news agency reported.

The news first broke on Sina, a microblogging website where Ailun’s sister shared a message warning other iPhone 5 owners to be extra careful when answering calls. The post quickly went viral and Apple has apparently promised to look into the incident.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family,” Apple told Reuters. “We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter.”

Apple declined to answer whether this is the first time an iPhone has malfunctioned in this manner. The company was previously in hot water in China after its warranty policies in the country were exposed as unfair when compared to the rest of the world.

Investigation finds that knockoffs fuel false rumors of budget Apple iPhone

The "budged iPhone" bit like the Loch Ness monster – people keep talking about it, showing photo evidence and others keep debunking it. The G for Games team decided to do some cyber-sleuthing and uncover the truth behind some of those leaks.
What they discovered is not too shocking – the colorful backs in some photos of the "budget iPhone" are just back panels manufactured by an unrelated (to Apple or Foxconn) Chinese company. You can even buy one if you like for $67.

The second part of the investigation is somewhat more interesting as it focuses on photos that show the front of the "iPhone" (so it's not just a plastic case). That, however, turned out to be another thing on sale in the Chinese online shops – a dummy "iPhone 5S" that can be yours for $52.
The page tries to make it sound like a real device that wasn’t completed because Apple decided to change the design midway. Yet thee more likely scenario here certainly is that it's just a knockoff.
Of course, none of this should come as a surprise – we already knew that a company, Techdy, was selling Android-powered device (with Snapdragon 600 and everything) that look just like the leaked budget iPhone. If this is a marketing strategy, it's a clever one – plenty of free exposure by various tech blogs and people eager to read about Cupertino's next.
Anyway, you can read more details of the G for Games investigation and their correspondence with one of the makers of the back panels.

Samsung ships 150k Galaxy S4 LTE-A units in Korea

Samsung released its Galaxy S4 LTE-A in Korea a couple of weeks ago and the company has already managed to ship 150,000 units of its latest smartphone in its homeland. That might not be a particularly impressive number compared to the over 20 million units sold by the original Galaxy S4, but when you consider that it's a single market and just two weeks of availability the figure is certainly decent.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A comes with the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC rather than the Snapdragon 600 that powers the international version, but is otherwise identical to its predecessor. The international variant comes with a 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 2 GB of RAM, 13 megapixel rear camera, 32 GB in-built memory, microSD card slot and IR port.
The fact that Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A is able to make use of the SK Telecom's new super-fast network speeds and equally well supported by the Samsung's strong marketing campaign has certainly helped push those sales numbers so high.

Unlocked Nokia Lumia 1020 goes on pre-order in the USA for $735

Nokia Lumia 1020was officially unveiled just last week and understandably caused quite a lot of excitement. It's the long awaited 41MP PureView Windows Phone-powered smartphone that had been in the rumorlands since Nokia 808 PureView came around.
Nokia Lumia 1020 will hit the USA on July 26 exclusively via AT&T. It will cost $300 with a two-year contract and the carrier's pre-order campaign is going live tomorrow. Lumia 1020 will hit the shelves worldwide before the end of September.
Meanwhile, the retailer Negri Electronics is taking pre-orders for the unlocked version of the cameraphone. You can book your unit for $735.50, but there is no specific shipping date. We guess you'll receive it shortly after the official premiere on AT&T.

Yesterday, we also saw the Lumia 1020 go on pre-orders in Germany, but users there will have to wait longer to get their units. The European version of the device that is supposed to launch by the end of Q3. Europeans will also need to pay quite a lot more to own the Lumia 1020, with pre-orders going for the hefty €800 (we suspect final price will be a bit lower, though).

Android 4.2.2 for HTC One is now live in the UK, Ireland and Spain

The global rollout of the Android 4.2.2 update for the HTC One began on July 6 and most of the European owners are already enjoying the new firmware. A few countries such as the UK, Ireland and Spain were left out of the loop for a while, but they are finally getting to experience Android 4.2.2 on the HTC One now.

HTC One owners in the UK, Ireland and Spain may want to check their phones for a new software update. A small 1.5MB bugfix update should be waiting for them as a preparation for the huge 416.5MB Android 4.2.2 firmware upgrade.
Here goes the official changelog:
Android 4.2.2 update (includes Daydream, Photo Sphere, lockscreen enchantments)
Launcher bar enhancement
Widget panel rearrangement
New Lock screen style widget
Enhanced Home button behavior
Home button options added to make navigation menu bar removable
Show battery level in status bar
Quick settings panel: 12 default settings by new touch gesture
AE/AF lock feature: Lock Exposure/Focus on viewfinder screen
Zoe: New Zoe file format for better file management
Video Highlights: Add 6 extra themes
Music channel: Seeks, fast forward/rewind functions added

There are very few countries left to receive the Android 4.2.2 for the HTC One now and, seeing how the rollout progresses, they probably won't have to wait for much longer.

ZTE Geek U988S to become first Tegra 4-powered smartphone

A China Mobile version of the upcoming ZTE Geek has been pictured, by none other than ZTE itself. The picture comes in conjunction with images outed by China's TENAA certification database, which is notorious for leaking devices coming out of Asia. ZTE has released some shots of the device from a more flattering (albeit somewhat gushy) perspective.
Sporting a 5-inch fullHD LCD and an upgraded front-facing camera, the real star of the show is the expected NVIDIA Tegra 4 chipset inside, featuring four Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. This is bound to be the official debut of the chipset in a smartphone.
For now, the ZTE Geek U988S is set to work only on China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network, so we'll have to wait and see if a global version of the Tegra 4-powered Geek is also in the works.

HTC said to be working on 6-inch One Max

It looks like HTC is finally ready to jump on the phablet bandwagon. According to the sources at Mobile Geeks, HTC is working on a One Max with a 6-inch, 1080p display.

Other specs include a stonking 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage space and a spacious 3,200mAh battery. It's not clear whether HTC will opt for some sort of pen input such as the S Pen on Samsung's Galaxy Note series.
The One Max is said to release some time in September, which is around the same time Samsung would be releasing the Galaxy Note III. Although we are not fond of overly large smartphones here, it's hard not to get fascinated by the insane specifications on these devices.

Angry Birds Star Wars II Announced for Sept. 19

Rovio has announced that you will be able to download Angry Birds Star Wars II on Sept. 19. But get ready for this one to cost you a little extra.

Along with the new game, Rovio and Hasbro are introducing Telepods, actual Angry Birds toys that you can use to customize the line-up of which birds you will be using in any given level. Want to bring Yoda in? Touch his Teleod to the tablet and you’ll be able to use him.

In other words, Angry Birds just turned into Skylanders.

The biggest issue with this announcement is that the original Angry Birds Star Was still has locked levels on it. Before Rovio gets around to releasing a whole new game – with extras for you to buy – perhaps it may want to complete the original game?

The app itself will be available for download on Sept. 19, and the Telepds should be available for purchase around the same time.

Microsoft Surface Smartwatch Allegedly in Development

Microsoft has been working on a smartwatch for over a year, but according to recent reports the company has moved testing for the wearable technology to the same team that brought us the Surface tablet. The latest prototype features oxynitride aluminum, a translucent aluminum that is three times stronger than glass. The watch will reportedly launch with removable wristbands in a variety of colors, AmongTech reports.

The latest Microsoft smartwatch news was also confirmed by The Verge, which added that the device may run a specialized version of Windows 8 developed to interact with other Windows devices. The Surface smartwatch will allegedly come with LTE support, 6GB of storage and additional storage could likely provided by SkyDrive. It will also display notifications and music controls.

Previously, Microsoft’s Xbox accessories team was heading the company’s smartwatch development. A report in April noted that the company was considering a 1.5-inch display for the “Joule,” which would monitor the wearer’s heart rate. However, that model has allegedly been scrapped for a new aluminum design.
