iOS 7 Redesign Features Lots of Black and White

We still don’t know much about the heavily redesigned iOS 7 for sure, but Sir Jony Ive and the rest of Apple are hard at work completely revamping the mobile operating system that Steve Jobs and former iOS chief Scott Forstall established with the original iPhone.
Rumor has it Ive and Apple will ditch the heavy shading style known as skeuomorphism for flat surfaces and a theme heavy on black and white. The handful of in-house apps will also get a redesign from the inside out. Icons will be simplified with each getting it’s own distinct color. Inside, each app will feature a white base overlayed with its respective color, 9to5Mac said.
Two other corners of iOS that are ripe for change at Ive’s hands are the notification center and lock screen. Have you figured out the pattern yet? Both will lose their shaded designs for a flat black and white layout. The lock screen’s password number grid will be replaced with round, black buttons and may also see improved gesture control. Meanwhile, the drop-down notification center is expected to feature a few new widgets.
If the rumors are true, Jony Ive’s vision for iOS 7 will drastically change the look and feel of the software without alienating users or changing the way iOS works. So what would Steve Jobs think? Apple’s fearless leader was never one to back down, and the coming changes threaten to strip away a piece of his legacy. Then again, Jobs was never afraid to make bold moves, and in the face of growing competition from Android and complaints that iOS is getting stale, a drastic redesign from Apple’s design guru may be exactly what Steve Jobs would have ordered.

How to Root the Galaxy S4 For Verizon

The Verizon Galaxy S4 hasn’t event been on the market for one full day and already an intrepid hacker has released a guide detailing how to root Samsung‘s newest handset for Verizon subscribers.
Droid Life notes that the method, which was posted on the XDA Developers online forum, is a relatively easy approach that won’t make you wipe the handset and doesn’t require any Android Debug Bridge (ADB) skills.
Here’s how to root your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, as provided by the folks on the XDA-Developers forums, but please do so at your own risk:

Step 1:

  1. Download and Install Samsung Official USB Drivers - Link
  2. Download and extract ODIN v3.07 - Link
  3. Download the VRUAMD2 Prerelease Kernel - Link
  4. Download the VRUAMDK Stock Kernel - Link
  5. Download and extract the Motochopper Root Exploit Tool - Link

Step 2:

  • Boot phone into ODIN mode (See here for how-to).
  • Flash the VRUAMD2 Prerelease Kernel using ODIN v3.07 ***in PDA section only*** (See here for guide on flashing).
  • Boot back to Android and verifying everything is still working and kernel has flashed successfully.

Step 3:

  • Verify in Security setting on your device that you have “Unknown sources” checked.
  • Verify in Developer options setting on your device that you have “USB debugging” checked.
  • Verify in Developer options setting on your device that you have “Verify apps via USB” unchecked.
  • Connect your phone to your computer and open “Run.bat” file from the location you have extracted motochopper to.
  • If successful, after your phone reboots, check if SuperSU has any update in the Play Store.
  • Open SuperSU app and let the binary update itself to the latest. ***VERY IMPORTANT OR YOU WILL LOSE ROOT ON STEP 4***
  • Once complete, just open a root application and verify that is able to access root properly.

Step 4:

  • Boot phone into ODIN mode (See here for how-to).
  • Flash the VRUAMDK Stock Kernel using ODIN v3.07 ***in PDA section only*** (See here for guide on flashing).
  • Boot back to Android and verifying everything is still working and kernel has flashed successfully.
  • After your phone boots back to Android, you should now be fully rooted and on the fully original stock firmware as the device came.
Again, we always recommend that you know what you’re doing before attempting to tool around with your device. Be sure to back up your data and do your research first.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD Soon Available in 170 Countries

Amazon on Thursday said its 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD models will be available in over 170 countries starting June 13, and pre-orders are already available on the company’s website. Aside from Google’s Nexus 7 and the iPad mini, Amazon’s two latest tablets are perhaps the most well known small tablets out there, and certainly the most competitively priced. As portals to Amazon’s immense ecosystem, they’re great devices for consuming media, and offer superb build quality.
Pre-orders are currently set at $214 for the 7-inch model, and $284 for the 8.9-inch model. 
Executing a wider rollout will only help to grow Amazon’s presence in the tablet market, and could easily hype demand for any subsequent successors, whenever that might be.

Dual-SIM Samsung Galaxy Star to be released on July 31 for €70

Samsung announced the Galaxy Star in the beginning of April. It is a low-end droid, which will redefine the smartphone landscape with its rock bottom pricing.
The little smartphone runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is powered by a single-core 1GHz processor. It features a 3" QVGA display, a 2MP snapper, 512MB of RAM, and an expandable 4GB worth of an internal storage.
The most important thing that we take away from Samsung's announcement today about the dual-SIM S5282 Galaxy Star hitting the shelves in India on July 31 is the ground-breaking (literally) price point.
The S5282 Galaxy Star will cost only around €70, which is straight feature-phone price segment and probably makes it the cheapest smartphone to be made by a major mobile phone manufacturer to date.


We hope the smartphone's availability in other countries around the world won't take long after the Indian launch on July 31.
There is still no official pricing and availability on the single-SIM version (S5280) of the Samsung Galaxy Star, but we bet it will launch about the same time.

The Huawei Ascend P6 smartphone has been in the rumorland for a while. First, we learned its specs and then we even got to see some live pictures.
Today's leak is even better, it shows an official render of the device.


With its 6.18mm of thickness Huawei Ascend P6 should be world's slimmest smartphone when it becomes official.
The rest of the specs we know so far include the 4.7" 720p screen (312ppi), Android 4.1.2, a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor in a Hisilicon K3V2 chipset with 2GB of RAM, an 8MP main camera and a 2MP front-facing camera, plus 32GB of built-in storage.
The Huawei Ascend P6 is expected to be announced at a press conference in London, which Huawei has scheduled for June 18.

Oppo will launch its European web store on Monday, May 27

Oppo announced the opening of its official European web store. Users across Europe will be able to shop for the Chinese company's products starting this coming Monday, May 27.

The first device to go on sale will naturally be the company’s flagship, the Oppo Find 5. The quad-core Android beast with a 5" 1080p display will be priced at the highly acceptable €399 for a unlocked handset, free of carrier branding.
The Oppo Find 5 units will be shipping from Europe. This means that customers across the continent won't have worry about paying customs fees.

Sony Xperia S Jelly Bean update is out, it was about time

Good news, Xperia S fans, the wait is over! After having to endure countless delays and after seeing lots of deadlines coming and going away, the Xperia S users will finally be able to enjoy some Jelly Bean goodness.
Sony France has confirmed the first builds of the Xperia S Jelly Bean update is out and the users should get their update notifications soon. As usual, the updates will roll-out gradually, but we believe it won't take long before most Xperia S out there run on Jelly Bean.
The update will be available both via the Sony PC Companion and over-the-air and we suggest you check for an update both ways just to make sure.

Galaxy S4 Developer Edition for AT&T and Verizon shows up

Samsung is working on a couple of special editions for its Galaxy S4 flagship - a Developer Edition and a Google Edition. The Developer Edition has cropped up on Samsung’s web site for both AT&T and Verizon.
What’s the difference between a Developer Edition and a regular Galaxy S4 you ask? Well, in the US the S4 bootloader is going to be locked, so putting on a custom ROM will be more difficult (but not impossible). This special edition comes with the bootloader unlocked to make it easier for devs to tweak the phone to their needs.

The phones for AT&T and Verizon are the 16GB versions and seem to come only in Black Mist color. There’s no pricing on either phone, both are labeled “Coming Soon!”. Actually, the page for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition has been pulled down.
AT&T and T-Mobile will be getting another version of the Galaxy S4 with an unlocked bootloader - the Google Edition, which comes with stock Android.

HTC allegedly working on One with stock Android

Google surprised everyone at the I/O 2013 keynote by unveiling a special edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 running stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Now, it seems HTC is working on a similar version of its own HTC One for the US market.

According to the sources at Geek.com, HTC is working on a version of the HTC One running stock Android Jelly Bean instead of its usual Sense UI.
At this moment, it is unclear whether HTC is working with Google on this. This would decide how the phone is sold, i.e., through the Google Play Store or through HTC's own online store and whether or not the phone would get timely updates (stock Android does not necessarily guarantee quick updates if its not directly from Google). If you recall, Hugo Barra did briefly mention the HTC One during the keynote before announcing the S4 with stock Android, so it's quite likely HTC is collaborating with Google on this one.
As mentioned before, the device is expected to release only in the US, which is not the brightest of moves but that's how these companies usually roll. We are looking forward to hearing more on this front as an HTC One with stock Android is nothing short of exciting.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Aurora Red will be AT&T exclusive

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone is one of the best sellers in the market with more than 10 million units being sold in less than a month after the device's retail launch.
Samsung also announced four new shades for its popular Galaxy S4 smartphone that includes Blue Arctic, Red Aurora, Purple Mirage and Brown Autumn.

Apparently, the Red Aurora will be exclusive for AT&T and the latest hue will be up for pre-orders beginning May 24. The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Red Aurora is priced at $199.99 with a two-year contract (same as its otherwise colored siblings) and the smartphone will be available in-stores and online, starting from June 14.

It's official: HTC First UK launch is cancelled

HTC First took yet another critical hit today. The UK carrier EE (the merged Orange and T-Mobile) has confirmed it won't launch the HTC First in Britain and the pre-orders won't be fulfilled.
This strike on the HTC First comes shortly after rumors that AT&T will discontinue the Facebook mid-ranger due to low sales.

Today HTC exec claimed the company has shipped 5 million One flagships globally, but that's probably the only good news we heard recently about the Taiwanese manufacturer. It was good to hear HTC has dealt with the production hiccups, but HTC has already been shaken with the departure of its VP of Global Communications, Chief Product Officer and Asia's CEO. The HTC First failure isn't helping either.
HTC is still in trouble, but we hope the company will do better next couple of months. It managed to double the HTC One production and it solved its legal troubles with Nokia, so here is hoping.

HTC exec claims HTC One already reached 5 million sales

The HTC One got a troubled start due to supply shortages of crucial components – the aluminum unibody and the UltraPixel camera sensor – but an anonymous HTC exec speaking to the Wall Street Journal claims the phone has been doing pretty well despite that.
The One launched at the end of March in several countries and expanded its availability late last month. The exec claims there have been 5 million HTC Ones sold since launch and that there are still more orders than HTC can't fulfill, but the ramp up in production should be felt next month.
So, the HTC One has been on the market slightly longer than its chief rival, the Samsung Galaxy S4, which recently hit the 10 million sales mark. That's not bad at all and might signal a turnaround for the troubled company.
Of course, we won't have a confirmation of the 5 million number until HTC releases an official statement (they usually do every month).

Samsung device running Tizen OS confirmed by UAProf

A new device running the Tizen OS has been spotted on Samsung's UAProf website codenamed the Redwood GT-I8805. This is no real surprise as it was announced earlier by Samsung that we'll be seeing a Tizen device sometime in 2013 - in fact, even the codename Redwood has been seen floating around.


As far as specifications go, the LTE-enabled device will sport a 720p display of as-yet unknown diagonal, and despite earlier promises, will feature a standard Cortex-A9 SoC, rather than the more robust A15 processor line found in more recent high-end smartphones.
No word yet on when the other Tizen device, codenamed the GT-I8800 Melius, will surface, but we should hopefully hear more on both Tizen flagships as they approach announcement.

HTC Desire 600 dual sim goes official, Sense 5 on board

The HTC One leads the charge of the Sense 5 experience and now the HTC Desire 600 dual sim fills the ranks with an affordable alternative. The smartphone was introduced today and is supposed to bring many of the One's premium features at a far lower price point.
The HTC Desire 600 dual sim runs Android Jelly Bean (probably 4.1) with Sense 5 on top, which includes the BlinkFeed screen that pulls updates and info from your social networking accounts and 1,400 media sources.
It's powered by a Snapdragon 200 chipset, which packs four Cortex-A5 CPUs clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM and Adreno 203 GPU. There's 8GB of non-expandable built-in storage and a 1,860mAh battery.


The smartphone has a 4.5" Super LCD2 screen with qHD resolution, surrounded by two BoomSound speakers, just like on the One. Beats Audio is, of course, also a part of the package.
The HTC Desire 600 dual sim packs an 8MP / 720p main camera and a 1.6MP front-facing camera that can be used to capture photos, which the Video Highlights feature combines into 30 second video clips. All you have to do is pick the music theme. It's not as great as Zoe, but it's in the same spirit.
As the name suggests, the phone has two SIM card slots and both cards are active at the same time – you can receive a call on one of them, even if the other is already in use. The phone has 3G with HSDPA connectivity (up to 7.2Mbps down), Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC and GPS (plus GLONASS in Russia and the EU).
The HTC Desire 600 will be available early next month and while it aims for global availability, it will start off with Russia, Ukraine and the Middle East. There's no info on pricing yet.

Samsung ships 10 million Galaxy S4 units, adds new colors

As expected, Samsung announced that it has reached ten million units shipped of its Galaxy S4 smartphone in less than a month of the device's retail launch. Samsung achieved the number in blistering pace - it took almost twice as long for the Galaxy S III to reach the magic number, and five and seven months for the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy S respectively.

In order to keep the sales momentum strong, Samsung announced four more Galaxy S4 color schemes which will be available this summer. Blue Arctic, Red Aurora, Purple Mirage, and the already leaked Brown Autumn will join the black and white colored Samsung Galaxy S4 versions currently on offer.
