Refreshed Sony Xperia Z with Snapdragon 800 coming up?

The Sony Xperia Z with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset exists and is actively been tested by the company, according to Eldar Murtazin, who claims he has seen and played with the device himself.

Murtazin, who has a somewhat mixed success with his predictions and leaks as of recently, also reports that the prototype he has tested sports a similar display to the HTC One's Super LCD 3. However, he doesn't believe Sony will leave it in the final version of the device, provided it exists.

Another Sony smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra is all but confirmed to sport the same Snapdragon 800 CPU, which lends Murtazin's information some credibility. The company has given spec bumps for a handful of its devices in the past, namely the Xperia arc and Xperia S - with the fall-launched Xperia arc S and Xperia SL, respectively.
Sony's event is tomorrow, so we'll see what the company has got in store soon enough.

Samsung joint venture to promote carbon fiber, maybe in phones too

There was murmurs that Samsung is looking into alternative materials when the HTC One garnered so much praise for its aluminum unibody. However, the South Koreans may have had a completely different material in mind – carbon fiber.
Samsung Petrochemical and SGL Group formed a joint venture to "develop new industrial and electronic applications with carbon composite materials for Samsung and the Korean market." Obviously, much of the carbon fiber will go to industrial products, but electronics and electronic media is mentioned in the press release several times.
As is the need for lighter products and weight is a big factor in modern smartphones. Of course, the press release makes no direct mention that future Samsung phones will use carbon fiber and by the sound of it the initial target is the Korean market.
Still, we'd love to see more carbon fiber phones – so far it has seen limited use in luxury phones and a handful of LG phones (the Secret line), but tough and light phones sound great, fingers crossed.

Sony Xperia ZU images show how big it is, using a pencil as a stylus

A tipster just dropped off two images of the Sony Xperia ZU (codename Togari) in our inbox. One is an official-looking promo image that shows someone using a pencil to operate the ZU, while the second image is a photo that reveals just how big Sony's upcoming phablet is.
When we first heard the pencil as a stylus rumor, we thought it was a little crazy, but most leaks so far have mentioned it. We'll have to wait and see what it offers in terms of accuracy and pressure sensitivity.

The second image is quite interesting too – it shows the Xperia ZU next to the current flagship, the Xperia ZR (4.55" screen) and the Samsung Galaxy S4 (5" screen) and it dwarfs both. Rumors put the ZU's screen at 6.44".
There's the flap in the upper right corner of the device but the photo is too dark to tell much else.
Anyway, screenshots that leaked earlier show a redesigned UI that makes good use of the extra screen real estate. The software is supposedly Android 4.2.2 running on top of a Snapdragon 800 chipset (like the rumored Xperia Z refresh) and there's even talk of an IP58 certification. These are, of course, unofficial rumors.
Sony has scheduled a press event for tomorrow when the Xperia ZU is expected to be officially unveiled. We'll be covering the event, so stick around for more answers.
