Alleged images and video of budget Apple iPhone emerge

A slew of alleged images and video footage of Apple's much talked about budget iPhone made an appearance on the web. The photos look in line with the leaked colored shells from last week.

The images reveal a svelte-looking handset with a 4" display, made of polycarbonate. Despite its plastic nature however, the budget iPhone is said to be impressively well put together.

Curiously, the photos come courtesy of a well-known Chinese manufacturer of KIRF devices called Techdy, so we urge you to process them with a pinch of salt. Techdy already has on offer an Android booting copy of the device you see above, sporting a quad-core Snapdragon 600 SoC, priced at an eye-popping $199.

Motorola DROID MAXX for Verizon press image leaks out

Alleged press photo of the Motorola DROID MAXX for Verizon Wireless has made the rounds. The press photo appears to be in line with the Motorola DROID Ultra, whose live image we saw a few days back.

The design the upcoming DROID MAXX looks like an evolution of the Motorola DROID RAZR HD family of smartphones. The smaller screen bezel, suggests that the newcomer might sport a larger display than the 4.7" unit of the current crop of Motorola DROID devices.
There's no info on the specs of the Motorola DROID MAXX at the moment. Considering the Motorola DROID family history however, it is all but certain that it will be a proper high-end device.

Apple Patents Flexible Battery; Perfect for iWatch, Bendable Smartphones

Yesterday, Apple was awarded a new patent for a “flexible battery pack” that could be used to power the rumored iWatch or even a flexible iPhone. The patent describes how a series of batteries could attach together and “be shaped to fit a form factor of the electronic device,” without specifying what device in particular that might be.

Cupertino is reportedly hard at work on the company’s first smartwatch, rumored to be called the iWatch, with trademarks for the name popping up around the world in the past few weeks. Of course, a computerized wristwatch will require a new type of battery, and this patent suggests Apple may be even closer to releasing the rumored device than we expected.

It’s also possible that the flexible battery design could be destined for Apple’s first bendable smartphone, which is likely even further away from release than than the iWatch. While the technology for bendable screens has been around for a while now, we won’t see a flexible smartphone until companies can create flexible batteries, silicon and the rest of the components that make your handset work. We’re likely still years away from the final product, but a flexible battery is a step in the right direction.

iOS 7 Has Some Cool Additions Apple Failed to Mention

Starting today, Apple’s mobile OS is going to be completely different—new icons, new features, and an all new approach under Jony Ive. The core is still familiar. But Apple made it clear iOS 7 is essentially starting from the beginning; the biggest comprehensive update to the platform since launching in 2007.

The company spent a good deal of time going over the headlining features: Control Center, Multitasking, Notification Center, iTunes Radio, AirDrop, improved Siri and more. But there are some minor alterations Apple is introducing that the company didn’t go over on stage during its opening presentation on Monday. Now that folks are getting their hands on the beta version, little snippets of info are hitting the Web, and they’ll surely please fans.

For starters—and this really shouldn’t be such a big deal in the first place—Apple is allowing users to stick Newsstand in a folder. So, if you prefer, that little icon you never use can be banished to a folder of other apps you’d rather just delete (but can’t). Apple is finally giving up slight control to the user, which in itself is a big deal, however little. People are excited nonetheless.

Other little tidbits coming across the Web include a live clock icon which reflects the current time, a revamped Spotlight that can be accessed by tugging down on the home screen, and Flickr and Vimeo integration. It’s unclear exactly how those last two will work, especially with Apple putting a premium on its own iCloud services, but users will presumably be able to share through those platforms seamlessly.

We haven’t yet gotten the chance to use Jony Ive’s newly redone iOS, but we will as soon as possible. Over the coming days, users will likely find new quirks and features Apple failed to mention during its presentation, so keep an eye locked. One thing we’re really hoping for is quick reply to messages, but it doesn’t look like that’s a focus of this beta (maybe it’ll come later!).

Final Fantasy VII Now Available on Steam

The big one has arrived yet again! The one and only Final Fantasy VII has made its way back to PCs for the first time since 1998. Head on over to Steam to pick up a copy for $11.99, unless you live in Japan of course as Square Enix has cut off Steam access to all its games.

The new version comes with added achievements, controller support and a “character booster” option, which gives those unable to rise to the challenge the ability to raise a character’s level for those tough fights. Just let the game play itself for you, I suppose.

I hope you all get the chance to enjoy this classic once again, especially with the addition of achievements. Sounds like a lot of fun. I’d love to play alongside you all, but the glorious future of digital distribution is holding me back. My foreign IP address can only get me so far.

Square Enix would rather have me pay twice as much for a game not even in my native language.

Samsung's Q2 profits beat record, miss expectations

Samsung has released its Q2 financial guidance and the profits of the market leaders are projected to be $8.33 billion, a new record and an impressive $3 billion improvement over the same quarter last year.

As, one can expect, the strong sales of the company's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4 and its Galaxy S series along with its Note lineup have contributed the most to the record numbers.
However, despite the growth the numbers posted are slightly lower than market analysts expected. Profit was expected to reach $8.9 billion and missing on that number might have a negative impact on the stock prices of the South Korean giant.
The total sales figure and other numbers will be available on July 26 when the financial results for Q2 will be officially revealed.
